Reaction Injection Molding (RIM)

Using 2-part thermoset polymers that are mixed, injected and
react in the mold to form a solid thermoset polymer after a cure
period.

Advantages of RIM Molding

  • Over molding can provide soft flexible coating to
    structured part.
  • Standard and custom formulations; solid elastomer or
foam, rigid and flexible integral skin resins available
  • Reinforcing fibers can be used for additional strength
  • Lower cost tooling-soft plastic tooling available for low
volume production runs. Can provide injection molded
part look, feel and properties at a fraction of the tooling
    cost .

Disadvantages of RIM Molding

  • Material waste in flashing, sprue and vents.
  • Labor intensive process

Market:

Best value for soft or non-structural components such as
seating cushions, and armrests for vehicles, electronic/medical
equipment enclosures, flower pots, and architectural parts.
